Japan is known around the world as one of the safest and most polite countries but beneath the surface, something darker is happening. There is a new disturbing new phenomenon: butsukari (ぶつかり), a growing form of random physical harassment where strangers are intentionally slammed into on crowded streets and train stations.

From kasuhara (customer harassment) to chikan (train gropers), Japan has long struggled with hidden forms of everyday aggression. But butsukari otoko, sometimes referred to as butsukari ojisan, are taking things to another level. These so-called “bumping men” deliberately assault strangers during rush hour, disappearing into the crowd before anyone can react.
